Pain Medicine
Headache is the most common reason patients are referred to neurology. Migraine, which is much more than just a bad headache, is the most prevalent headache disorder diagnosed and treated. In the US each year, 12-15% of the population experiences migraine attacks. Over 3 million people suffer from chronic migraines, experiencing them more days than not. Overall, migraine is greatly underdiagnosed and undertreated. In just a small number of headache cases can a specific underlying cause be identified and eliminated as secondary headache.
Leveraging our academic medical institution’s robust clinical resources, we identify underlying causes of headaches when present, like cerebrospinal fluid abnormalities, viral infections, or secondary causes. Our experts collaborate across specialties, including neuroradiology, neuro-ophthalmology, ENT, and more to deliver integrated care.
Our care team includes five headache specialists, five nurse practitioners, nurses, and support staff. We partner closely with Children's Hospital Colorado to transition adolescent patients to adult care. CU Medicine providers also work within the hospital's concussion program to manage post-traumatic headache.
As CU School of Medicine faculty providers, we uphold high standards and quality of care. We also participate in professional headache organizations locally and nationally, including the American Headache Society and the Colorado Headache Society, to advance patient care and education.
