Metabolic Bone Disease
Metabolic Bone Diseases are disorders of bone remodeling that result in fractures or deformity of bones. The most common metabolic bone diseases are osteoporosis, osteomalacia, Paget's disease, renal osteodystrophy, osteitis fibrosa cystica and osteogenesis imperfecta. Osteoporosis is a particularly common disease that is responsible for approximately 1.5 million fractures in the United States each year. Our experienced providers specialize in the diagnosis and management of these conditions.
Diagnostic techniques available include state-of-the-art bone densitometry (Dual Energy X-ray absorptiometry or DXA), radiology, biochemical testing and bone biopsy, when indicated. Treatment modalities include exercise counseling, physical therapy, nutritional counseling, calcium supplements, vitamin D supplements, medications that inhibit bone resorption (bisphosphonates, estrogen, selective estrogen receptor modulators, calcitonin) and medications that stimulate bone formation (parathyroid hormones).

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in the United States and can progress to cirrhosis or End Stage Liver Disease. Risk factors include being overweight or obese, having Type 2 Diabetes or pre-diabetes, abnormal cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, and obstructive sleep apnea. With the right treatment plan, this disorder is reversible. Our trained specialists provide screenings for NAFLD, a workup for comorbid conditions, and management through lifestyle interventions and therapies to reverse this disorder. Unlike others who typically rely on liver biopsy for diagnosing and staging of NAFLD, we stress the use of noninvasive techniques to screen and stratify patients. Usually, this requires simple blood tests and use of imaging, such as ultrasound and tissue elastography to detect the presence, severity, and progression of NAFLD. Rarely do we recommend liver biopsy. If you have been diagnosed with fatty liver disease or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), or are concerned a patient may have this disorder, consider a referral to the Fatty Liver Clinic.
Treatment of NAFLD includes: Through a comprehensive workup, our providers can identify risk factors and other potentially contributing disorders to NAFLD, stage the severity of NAFLD and routinely monitor for progression of the disease. Lifestyle modifications are the foundation for management of NAFLD at any stage, which is promoted with help from nutritionists and weight loss experts. In addition, the Fatty Liver Clinic can help manage contributing disorders such as:
- Type 2 Diabetes
- Cholesterol Disorders
- High Blood Pressure
- Sleep Apnea
- Advanced Fibrosis/Hepatocellular Carcinoma
- Complications of Cirrhosis
