International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)

What is an IBCLC?

IBCLC stands for International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, which is the highest credential level for providers who specialize in breastfeeding.

IBCLCs are comprehensive and thoroughly trained providers who can address all lactation issues, from the very simple to the very complex.  IBCLCs offer evidence-based guidance to help you meet your breastfeeding goals while supporting all forms of feeding.

What does an IBCLC do?

IBCLCs assist parents in their lactation needs by providing personalized support and guidance. IBCLCs assist patients with common concerns, such as low milk supply, mastitis and plugged ducts and breastfeeding pain. They are there to answer any questions the patients have related to breastfeeding.

Patients do not need to have a breastfeeding concern to benefit from working with an IBCLC, as they can help with preventive milestones such as:

  • Beginning to pump
  • Returning to work
  • Weaning
  • Starting Solids
  • Travel Planning
  • Introducing Bottles

Who needs an IBCLC?

IBCLCs can help both currently breastfeeding families and expectant families to meet their feeding goals. These providers can assist in helping expectant families prepare for the birth of their child with prenatal planning for breastfeeding, which typically includes:

  • Insight into what babies need at different stages of breastfeeding
  • Parent resources for breastfeeding
  • How to position and latch your baby for comfortable feeding
  • Information about potential situations and how to identify problems before they emerge
