Clinical Interest for Patients

Dr. Derek Stokes is a board certified, fellowship-trained Sports Medicine Physician with his primary residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Stokes specializes in the care of sports and activity-related injuries in both athletes and non-athletes of all ages and ability levels with specific clinical interests in diagnostic and procedural ultrasound. He is committed to providing comprehensive care that addresses not only the injury itself but also the individual's overall well-being and goals. Dr. Stokes completed medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia and residency training at the University of Colorado. Upon finishing residency training, Dr. Stokes underwent an additional year of fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Stokes is active in research with interests including musculoskeletal ultrasound and orthobiologics for the treatment/prevention of musculoskeletal disorders.

Personal Interests

Dr. Derek Stokes brings a unique perspective to his role as a sports medicine physician as a former collegiate basketball player. Dr. Stokes enjoys staying active in his own life, often hiking and skiing in the Colorado mountains, cycling, and working out at the gym. He shares his love of the outdoors with his 3 year old Labrador Retriever and his fiancée. These experiences provide him with first-hand knowledge of the challenges and rewards of maintaining an active lifestyle.

Clinical Interests for Referring Providers

My clinical interests include the diagnosis and management of sports medicine and activity-related injuries in both athletes and non-athletes of all ages. These conditions include sprains, strains, tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, fractures, and nerve entrapment, among others. I utilize diagnostic and procedural musculoskeletal ultrasound extensively in my practice along with electrodiagnostics (EMG/NCS) for evaluation of nerve injury.
