Dr. Baker studies pulmonary vascular development and how pre-term birth disrupts this normal process to cause bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a form of neonatal chronic lung disease. Specifically, his lab isolates and characterizes circulating cells called endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) from the umbilical cord blood of pre-term infants. His ongoing clinical-translational studies will help to better understand how EPCs function as biomarkers of disease and will lead to novel ways of treating and preventing BPD.
