Clinical Interests for Referring Providers

My clinical interests include infections of the nervous system with a particular focus on viral infections including those causing encephalitis, meningitis or myelitis. Specific diseases include CNS infections caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV), West Nile virus (WNV), Enterovirus D-68, Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).

Research Interest for Referring Providers

Pathogenesis of viral infections of the Central Nervous System. We have funding to study reoviruses, and flaviviruses including West Nile and Japanese encephalitis and are initiating studies on Enterovirus D-68 (which has recently been linked to cases of acute flaccid paralysis especially in children). We are involved in clinical collaborative studies of JC virus-associated PML and in the use of Next Generation Sequencing of human CSF and brain tissue to identify unknown or unsuspected pathogens causing human CNS infections.
